Visas for India

Visas are required for all visitors to India unless they are Indian citizens. Visas can be applied for in person or by post at the High Commission of India in London. Applications for visas from persons not ordinarily residing in the UK or from people of Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan origin are considered only in the High Commission of India, London and Consulate General of India, Birmingham. Processing of visas may take one week or in some cases much longer. Applicants for visas not ordinarily resident in the UK and Sri Lankan nationals are required to complete an additional form. Pakistani and Bangladeshi nationals have to file special application forms for visas.

All types of application forms for visas can be obtained free of charge in any of the following ways:

  • Collected from the India Place window of the High Commission of India at Aldwych, London from 8.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and from 2.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. Mondays to Fridays, except holidays (click here for the official holiday list). However, for processing of visa applications at the counters, queue numbers are issued to applicants only between 8.30 a.m. and 12.00 noon.
  • Downloaded from the High Commission of India's website
  • Obtained through fax back service - please dial 0906 844 4543. (To use this service, you need to dial the number from an ordinary telephone, follow instructions and you must have a fax machine on which you can receive the form returned by the High Commission.)
  • Obtained through the post by sending a stamped self-addressed envelope to the Visa Section of the High Commission of India at India House, Aldwych, London, WC2B 4NA

Full information about visas for travel to India can be found on our Indian Visa Information page.

Visas for Pakistan

Visas are required for anyone travelling to Pakistan on a British passport, which must be valid for a minimum of 6 months at the time. To facilitate travel to and staying in Pakistan for foreign businesspersons and investors, policies for business visas have been considerably relaxed. Business visas can be issued to bona fide businesspersons and investors from the countries listed in Table 34, which include all EU Member States, for up to 3 years with multiple entries by Pakistan Missions abroad.

Full information about visas for travel to Pakistan can be found on our Pakistan Visa Information page.

Visas for Sri Lanka

Visas are needed by visitors to Sri Lanka unless they are Sri Lankan citizens. Non resident Sri Lankans who hold citizenship of another country are also required to obtain visas before arriving in Sri Lanka. Visas should be obtained from the Sri Lankan embassy or consulate in the applicant's home country.

It should be noted that under no circumstances will the status of a visa be changed after arrival in Sri Lanka. For example, a person who visits Sri Lanka on holiday cannot engage in any business / profession, social work, charity or any other form of voluntary work or employment paid or unpaid without obtaining prior visas for such purposes.

Full information about visas for travel to Sri Lank can be found on our Sri Lanka Visa Information page.

Visas for Bangladesh

Applications for visas must be filed in duplicate along with 3 copies of recent passport size photographs. A current passport is needed. A photocopy of the application form for visas or a form downloaded from the Internet will be accepted provided it contains all the information as printed in the original form.

For business visas, a letter from the sponsoring organisation in the UK should be provided. This should give details of the financial coverage of the applicant for the trip. Business visas will not be provided without a letter of invitation from a Bangladeshi organisation mentioning the applicant's name and passport number. These items should be supplied with application forms for visas.

Full information about visas for trvel to Bangladesh can be found on our Bangladesh Visa Information page.

Visas for the United Kingdom

People from certain countries, known as visa nationals, will need visas to enter the UK for any reason.

Entry clearance is the formal term to describe the application process for visa nationals who wish to travel to the United Kingdom and for non-visa nationals who intend a longer stay or to settle in the UK. The entry clearance certificate, more commonly called a visa, is put into your passport or travel document.

An entry clearance (visa) officer at a British mission overseas will decide if you qualify for entry before you travel to the United Kingdom. Entry clearance officers work to strict rules and procedures - Diplomatic Service Procedures (DSPs) - which you can read more about on the UK visas website

Visas are required by travellers who:

  • are not a UK/EU national
  • are stateless (you do not have a nationality)
  • hold a non-national travel document (a travel document which does not give you the nationality of the country that issued it), or
  • hold a passport issued by an authority that is not recognised in the UK
  • Full information about visas for travel to the United Kingdom can be found on our UK Visa Information page.
